Muskegon Lake is a drowned river mouth. These are Lacustrine systems Including deepwater and wetland habitat types. Muskegon Lake is a special, unique, globally significant ecosystem, encompassing emergent wetlands, forested / shrub wetlands, and mixed hardwood swamp.  Surrounding uplands include dune lands and white pine /white oak forests.
