Muskegon River below the former Zephyr Oil Refinery!

Trestle Evening RiverAs this Great Lakes Legacy Act cleanup project moves forward, updates will be available here and at http://www.greatlakesmud.org/muskegon-lakes-zephyr-site.html.  The Zephyr project is one of seven major Muskegon Lake restoration projects that will be completed over the coming few years.

Once these projects are completed, Muskegon Lake will be removed from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOC). Local, state, regional and federal partners have been working hard to restore and revitalize Great Lakes AOCs. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Remediation Division and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Great Lakes National Program Office are co-sponsoring the Zephyr cleanup. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the DEQ are also cleaning up groundwater, characterizing soils, and preparing the property for redevelopment. By doing this, we are ensuring the environmental quality of Muskegon River and Muskegon Lake natural resources and creating economic benefits for the region.
